Phthalates are toxic substances that may be found in soft PVC, a type of plastic which is also used in the manufacturing of erasers. Concerns have been raised by consumers about the hazard of children’s exposure to phthalates by licking and chewing erasers. Based on a project performed by the BSMI on marketed erasers in 2010, a high phthalates level was detected and the labels did not show where they were manufactured. The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI), after having consulted with interested parties, intends to regulate the chemical materials and physical performance of erasers, including the prohibition of use of phthalates (DBP, BBP, DEHP, DNOP, DINP and DIDP) (the concentration level shall be less than 0.1%).

Products Covered: Eraser commodities (HS/CCCN 3926.10.00.00.3, 4016.92.00.00.3)
